So in addition to yet another mediocre season of Iron Fist (less mediocre than season one but still...) they also released the Dragon Prince which is very much not mediocre.
Created by the same writing talents as behind Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: Legend of Korra, it's a new fantasy universe but with some more standard tropes: elves, dragons and humans behaving badly and screwing things up. Like the Avatar stories
it is young adult focused but has their multi-layered characters and motivations and hopefully some twists.
I'm only up to episode 6 but am enjoying it a lot. No obnoxious comic relief characters (so far). It uses modern colloquialisms and has a lot of call outs to other fantasy
The only thing irritating me so far is that for some reason the deaf character, who uses ASL, doesn't have her lines also in captions when she isn't be "translated" by her subordinate. I understand they want to emphasize her communication style and create some special moment for the deaf community being represented by her character but this is silly. Not every deaf person uses ASL and excluding parts of your audience in an attempt to be inclusive is just teh dumb. The elves don't speak elvish among themselves, and would you blank the screen if they add a blind character?
Other than that good stuff. Its 9 twenty-five minute episodes. Check it out.
